The Onion Effect is a third-year Immersive Media exhibition by the Netherlands Film Academy. It reveals that beneath every surface emotion, there is something more—something complex, nuanced, and worthy of exploration. The act of peeling back these layers offers the opportunity to face emotions head-on and confront the truths that lie hidden beneath.

The Immersive Media Bachelor program of the Netherlands Filmacademty is about discovering new forms of storytelling using experimental technology. Its students play with both analog and digital media to create immerse experiences. This presentation showcases the current progression of the third year students’ personal research. They all play with different media and question their context to generate a response. Just like the peeling of an onion, they create work to provoke an emotional reaction, revealing more with every layer.

Het 'Onion Effect' onthult dat er onder elke oppervlakte-emotie iets meer schuilt—iets complex, genuanceerd en waard om verkend te worden. Het proces van het afpellen van deze lagen biedt de kans om emoties direct onder ogen te zien en de waarheden te confronteren die verborgen liggen onder de oppervlakte.

De Immersive Media opleiding van de Nederlandse Filmacademie draait om het ontdekken van nieuwe vormen van verhaalvertelling met behulp van experimentele technologie. Studenten spelen met zowel analoge als digitale media om meeslepende ervaringen te creëren. Deze presentatie toont de huidige voortgang van het persoonlijke onderzoek van de derdejaars studenten. Zij spelen met verschillende media en bevragen de context ervan om een reactie uit te lokken. Net als het afpellen van een ui creëren ze werk om een emotionele reactie te provoceren en onthullen ze steeds meer met elke laag.
