What flavour of apocalypse keeps you up at night? Does it taste of war, the climate crisis or white nationalism? Have you started a list on your phone of all you would pack to survive the Worse Case Scenario?
The workshop sees participants designing their go-bag and prepare for the performance. Later, during the 'Smash the Apocalypse' performance at the exhibition opening on November 14th, artist Rachel Walker-Konno and four participants will sculpt in clay the practical solution (a 'go bag') to their worst fears (our type of apocalypse) and then destroy it in a poetic riddance ritual. In this performance wet clay, its changeability and the meditative trance one can get into by touching, manipulating and reshaping it, is essential to the processing and excommunication of participants’ fears. Making themselves free to surrender to the rhythmic and cyclical nature of our existence and embrace the slow transformation to the worlds we want, saved from the ruins of apocalypse.
For this performance that will open the ‘Sensory Dialogues Through Touch’ exhibition at the Treehouse NDSM we are searching for four participants to take part.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Rachel Walker-Konno (Amsterdam, 1990) is a mixed-media artist, writer and activist obsessed with banishing thoughts of the capitalist apocalypse and replacing these with visions of a caring feminist economy. Building on her decade of experience in activism with diverse communities for social and environmental justice around the globe and embedded in actions and objects mimicking everyday routines, Rachel takes her audiences on a ride of re-imagination, through playful participatory performances that are part confession, part manifesto. Her aim is to create an iterative process with her audience, where a performance or workshop is an offer to which the audience responds and to which in turn Rachel responds - another vision of our world growing with each step.
