"Weeping Tower" is a musical performance with physical movement inspired by maritime folklore. Based on the history of the Schreierstoren in Amsterdam, "Weeping Tower" is the place where the wives of sailors would gather and weep as their men set sail and left Amsterdam's harbour.
This project combines uncensored sailors’ tunes sung by lyrical singers (currently studying at the Conservatory of Amsterdam) with instrumental accompaniment in original classical chamber music arrangements, as well as electronic music specially composed for it. The piece is a balance between two worlds: dreams, thoughts, hallucinations and memories of a drowning sailor; and the reality of those who stayed on the shore, continuing to fight against the wind.
“Weeping Tower” addresses feelings of loneliness, loss of ground, search for ones’ shores, hope, despair, brothel desire, and endless and pure love. If you stare at the sea for a long time, you will have an immense amount of thoughts that come and go like waves. Although answers may remain elusive, it invariably gives rise to a myriad of essential questions.
