ART IN ACTION: IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE CREATIVE PROCESS [VRIJE RUIMTE FESTIVAL]
July 5, 2025

Time: 14h - 00h         Prices: See below

Art in Action is an event aimed at connecting and creating bonds through participatory art projects and interactive workshops!

Including options for both adults and kids, Art in Action covers a wide range of artistic disciplines, themes and methodologies. Some of them focus on creatively addressing subjects such as sustainability and cultural diversity, while others aim to dive straight into art forms and processes, like learning how to paint or make a song together with others.

Within the programme of Art in Action, you will find:

  • 2 creative journeys for adults and 1 for kids. These journeys are aimed at exploring creative processes through collective art-marking. Each journey consists of 3 different workshops.
  • Museumboefjes Kunsttour for toddlers
  • Creative walks on NDSM by Esther Kin, based on the Art-Based Learning method by cultural historian and maker Jeroen Lutters.  (Part of the NDSM Art Walks, created for 750 Amsterdam)
  • An evening jam session for both amateurs and professionals with drinks and snacks.

CREATIVE JOURNEYS

14h - 16h – €12 / free with Stadspas

1st JOURNEY - Tickets

Eco-Printing Workshop: Nature's Imprints by Vegan Bear Chef

A creative and sustainable experience to discover the art of eco-printing! Using various types of paper - from handmade recycled paper to watercolor paper – and fabrics, participants will explore unique techniques to transfer the colors and shapes of nature onto surfaces.
Materials will be provided, but participants will also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the surroundings of Treehouse NDSM, gathering leaves and flowers to use in their creations. Step-by-step guidance will help them experiment with different botanical printing methods to achieve stunning and one-of-a-kind results.

Hybrid Horizons - Collective installation by Bruna Souza

Participants are invited to talk to their neighbor and to learn about different aspects of their culture. Afterwards, they will be invited to create a visualisation of what they learnt about their partner. Using an old-school analogue projector, these visualisations will be drawn on a plastic sheet with colored markers and then projected onto the other person’s face and body. The sheets can be covered with anything they wish: drawings, images, symbols, text, abstract shapes, colors - but they must be a representation of the culture of their partner. Then, each person will be  photographed with their visual representation projected onto them. The result will be an instant personalised portrait to share parts of their cultural identity with each other,  as well as creating a visualisation of how the other person interprets their cultural identity. At the end of the workshop, there will be a large collage of all the photographs made into one huge piece. This piece can be presented somewhere in the neighborhood at the end of the event.
The project fosters empathy and understanding, celebrating our similarities and differences, learning from other cultures, and encouraging creativity.

Storytelling Through Music - by Ischico Velzel

Join pianist Ischico for a unique musical experience where connection and storytelling are at the heart of the performance. Through improvisation and personal narratives woven into her music, Ischico creates an intimate journey that speaks directly to the audience. It's not just about what is played, but the relationship formed between the performer and listener, bridging the space between them. This performance invites the audience to not only listen, but to feel the music and the stories unfold in real-time, making every moment truly shared.

2nd JOURNEY - Tickets

Lyrics That Did (Not) Happen By Marta Golka

In the workshop you will work out a song lyric / lyric skeleton in a short amount of time. Each group will start with a broad idea and a theme. Through use of your own experiences and experiences of your co-participants as well as a few simple tools, you will develop a storyline and catchphrases for the lyric (or even a full lyric).

Interactive Samba by Martina Bergonzoni

In her engaging performance, Martina invites the audience to become part of the music, offering an immersive introduction to the vibrant world of Brazilian music. Through simple phrases and accessible rhythms, she will guide participants in singing and using body percussion—such as claps, taps, and movement—to create a collective performance. This interactive experience is designed to break down the barrier between performer and audience, allowing everyone to contribute to the music in a spontaneous and fun way. Whether you are a seasoned musician or a first-time participant, the performance provides a welcoming space for all to explore the rich, rhythmic traditions of Brazil. Join in the rhythm, sing along, and feel the power of music as it brings people together, celebrating the universal language of sound and movement.

Collective Creative Painting with Ossa Kierkegaard

Ossa will invite the audience to co-create a large painting. She will guide people on different techniques and will give them the opportunities to enjoy using their imagination, connecting with the other participants and reacting to what they are painting to create something new together. The same painting will be worked on by 3 different groups. Each group will see what has been done before, and respect this first part of the painting to then continue on creating a second and third layer.

Creative walks on NDSM by Esther Kin

14h (Tickets) and 16h30 (Tickets) – €7 /  free with Stadspas

Part of the NDSM Art Walks, created for 750 Amsterdam

The NDSM wharf is a place to wander and be inspired by all forms of art and creativity. As an artist working in this field, I would like to show you around in a way that takes you into part of my work process.

I think it can also encourage you to create or realize new things.  By becoming aware of the images, objects, sound or other sensations that appeal to your interest at that moment, you begin your own creative process, something that is not only reserved for artists. It can be an impetus for a new idea, plan, decision or awareness of what is already there. By looking at art and creative expressions in this way, you can use your personal interests even better in shaping your daily life.
