The tame and the tiger: drawing cats with ink and brush

Our beloved creature, the cat, appears to us in many forms: cheerful, sleepy, soft, calm, begging for attention or playful and fast like a hunter. Drawing lines that can give character to such a versatile animal is a challenge, but great fun to try! You don't need any drawing experience to create your own appealing cat with simple lines and shapes in black ink.

More about Esther Kin (teacher)

I love the combination of emotion and movement. Two things I always try to use in my work. Materials that work well for me are ink and brushes. You can make a grand gesture without being tempted to reshape or cover up anything, which often detracts from spontaneity. Finding the balance between control and expression (letting go) is a real challenge to create work that is open and inviting, shows courage, but is not overflowing with brutality. I try to translate my subject into something that you can feel and recognise. That's why I choose something that resonates with everyone, a human posture or movement.

Prior to my current work, I worked on Motion Graphic Design, animation, illustration and calligraphy. All of which have been an invisible lead-up to my current developments. I enjoy supporting others in finding their creative language, with which they can give their own interpretation to the matters that are close to their hearts.
